Choral Opportunities
for Students
St Mary’s Collegiate
Church, in the heart of Swansea’s City Centre, offers opportunity for students
at Swansea University to become involved in its successful choir and
flourishing musical life.
We offer
Free
specialist choral training as part of an SATB mixed-voice choir singing a
wide-ranging Cathedral-style repertoire with the very finest of British
and European choral music.
Opportunities
in all voice parts and to sing in superb church acoustic ideally suited to
choral music, and with a magnificent organ.
Opportunity
to receive vocal, music theory and organ tuition.
Opportunity
to develop a stylistic awareness of historically informed performance
practice of choral music of the Renaissance and Baroque.
Recent
performances have been accompanied with the Chamber Orchestra of Wales,
Cambrian Viol Consort, West Glamorgan Youth Symphonic Brass, etc.
Singing
tours have included London, North Wales, Malvern Priory, Tewkesbury Abbey,
and the cathedrals of Gloucester, Exeter, Llandaff, St Davids, Brecon, and
Southwark.
Numerous
successes at RSCM Voice for Life exams (including Gold), and ABRSM
singing, organ and theory exams, with further opportunities for young
organists
BBC
Radio 4 live broadcast in December 2013, and a CD recording planned
for the near future.
Some
past members have also been members of National Youth Choir of Wales, and
some have taken up gap year cathedral scholarships.
Regular
pattern of 11.00am Choral Eucharist and 4.00pm Choral Evensong on Sundays,
with Choir Practice on Fridays, 7.30-9.00pm.
Assistance
with transport may be possible.
While there are vacancies for student members in all voice parts, there is are two choral or organ scholarship currently available for the academic year 2016-17 in partnership with Swansea University (soprano, alto, countertenor, tenor or bass, or for an organist) renewable annually at St Mary’s, up to the value of £1000 p.a (to include singing lessons or organ lessons). Scholarship auditions will be held during October.
