Icon of the Saviour (Brian Bessant)
A
gift of the Right Revd Anthony Pierce, Bishop of Swansea and Brecon, the
icon was Dedicated on January 6th 2002 during an ecumenical
service for the Epiphany. The gift commemorates the Bishop’s ministry at
St Mary, first as curate (1967-1974) and then as vicar (1996-1999).
Painted
within the Orthodox Tradition, the icon is modeled on:

OUR SAVIOUR, c.1400 by St Andrei Rublev, for the Deisis tier in the
Cathedral of the Dormition, Zvenigorod. Presently in the Tretiakov
Gallery, Moscow.

CHRIST, 1192 by Theodoros Apsevdis
for the Deisis at Panagia Arakiotissa, Lagoudera, Cyprus. Presently
in The Byzantine Museum, Nicosia.
(3) CHRIST, ALL SEEING, c. 1535 by Theophanis the Cretan for the iconostasis in the Katholikon of Iviron Monastery, Mount Athos.
The icon was painted by the Revd Canon Brian Bessant, vicar of Llanwrtyd Wells, iconographer in the Church in Wales.
